Home activity monitoring for couples

Summary

Isn’t “we’re here for each other” enough?

Most of the time, yes. But what happens when one of you goes away for a few hours, or even nights, to see the grandchildren, attend a funeral or take a trip? The other is alone for that time, without a safety net.

With Myah, the person at home simply carries on as normal, confident that if their routine changes, family and friends are alerted and can phone or call round. There are no scheduled check-in calls and no surveillance.

Why start activity monitoring now?

Crises choose for you: Support that arrives after a fall or a hospital stay for either one of a couple is rushed, unfamiliar, and can be resisted if it is perceived as proof of infirmity. A 2018 UK research review found telecare works best when introduced early as a ‘tool for living’.  We cover the research behind the reasons to be proactive, including what it does and does not show, in Why start monitoring now.

Convenience: Myah is not just a monitor; it supports daily living with weather and bin collection details in one place.  We aim to bring more useful information and heating control together so you don’t have to navigate numerous apps for comfortable daily living.  Myah helps your home look after both of you.

Monitoring needs a baseline: A system installed in a hurry has no idea what is normal for you. Is this week quieter than usual, or just an ordinary Tuesday? Months of ordinary days give it something to compare against. A BT telecare pilot in Liverpool found that daily activity profiles, built up over time, helped carers quickly spot changes such as a sudden rise in bathroom visits, because the system showed what normal looked like.

Control stays in your hands: With its in-home tablet view, Myah is completely transparent about the activity information other people can see about your life together.  You can also control who sees it, who gets alerts and when they are sent. You can try it, adjust it and get used to it as a couple, rather than having to adapt to a new technology in more stressful circumstances and be left wondering if you’ve lost control.

Why does the platform matter?

Many monitoring or smart home products only work with their own devices, so you end up with one app for monitoring, another for heating, others for weather and bins.  This places the burden on you to juggle the apps.  Myah is built with the express intent to bring all these household elements together, so they work together. No juggling, just one easy-to-use app.

We can do this because Myah is built on Home Assistant, a flexible platform used in over a million homes worldwide, and works with a wide range of home monitors and smart devices. That means Myah can look after your home as well as watch over it. Heating control is arriving this autumn. It works with popular smart heating systems and uses the activity Myah already sees. A tool that starts with useful everyday information and a monitoring safety net grows with you, without you starting again or trying to make multiple tools work together.

Does it make financial sense?

There are many cases in life where we spend money in advance of an event: life insurance, regular maintenance, even making a will.  Myah is built to be useful every day, and so it is more than an insurance policy, which only gives benefits when things go wrong.  We hope that it will give you much useful service and help you stay independent and safe in your home for longer.  That is why we have kept the monthly support costs as low as possible – there is no penalty for having it for many years.  We believe we are cheaper than other monitoring products within a year or 18 months, and they don’t provide the additional home assistance Myah does.  So as well as being useful and adaptable, it makes sense to start activity monitoring early with Myah. Like insurance, it’s a prudent choice to have in place before you need it.

What we do not claim

  • Myah is not a 24/7 emergency response service and it does not prevent falls. If you already have a pendant alarm, keep it: the two work well together.
  • With a couple at home, the sensors see household activity, not individual activity. Myah will alert your chosen contacts if things go unusually quiet when someone is at home.
