Two families we’ve spoken to recently have put doorbell-style cameras inside a parent’s home. The appeal is obvious: a button to press if something’s wrong, a notification when someone comes and goes, face recognition to show who’s at the door, and a live view whenever you want to check in.
It’s a completely understandable response to a real worry. But it raises one question: what happens on the day nobody checks in, and there’s nothing on camera to see?
What a camera is brilliant at, and where it stops
A camera lets you look at one place, at one moment, and judge with your own eyes that everything’s fine. Seeing Dad make a cup of tea, seeing the door open for the postman, spotting when he seems a bit off โ nothing else quite does that.
But most advice on placing cameras says the same thing: front door, living room, kitchen, yes; bedroom and bathroom, no. That’s sensible โ dignity has to draw a line somewhere. It also means the riskiest rooms are usually the ones with no coverage at all. A fall in the bathroom at 3am, a slow decline over an afternoon, simply being in bed when help was needed โ none of it shows up as ‘footage worth checking’, because nothing tells you to look.
Motion detection sounds like the fix, but it isn’t really built for this. Even where a camera logs motion events, it’s not designed to build a full picture of someone’s day across every room โ that’s a different job entirely. A 2025 review of fall-detection technology makes the same point: camera systems are fixed to specific rooms, so anywhere without one is effectively unwatched [1]. And the stakes are real โ falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in over-65s in the UK, with around 250,000 hospital admissions a year.
What the research actually says
The best independent evidence here comes from the NIHR, the UK’s public health research funder, whose 2018 review pulls together a decade of UK studies on assistive technology [2]. Two things stand out. First, timing: technology introduced early, before a crisis, works far better than technology brought in afterwards, when people tend to see it as a last resort. Second, ambient sensors genuinely catch things cameras miss โ in one London trial, motion sensors alone picked up a resident spending unusually long in the bathroom, triggering a helpful check. That’s not hypothetical; it’s a documented case of a system noticing something was wrong without anyone watching a screen.
The same review is honest that cameras haven’t been fully evaluated. A 2008 assessment by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), a UK public body, found the evidence base for video monitoring was limited and its privacy trade-offs hadn’t been fully explored [3]. So this isn’t a case of ‘cameras bad, sensors proven’ โ just a reminder that nobody should claim more certainty than the evidence supports.
Why dignity isn’t just a nice touch
This isn’t only about accuracy. It’s about whether someone will actually accept the help at all. The same research found older people sometimes quietly stop using technology that feels intrusive โ taking off a falls sensor so it can’t trigger, for instance. A tool only works if people keep using it. It’s why the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, also cited in the review, doesn’t back one technology over another โ it simply says to ask the person what they want and whether they’d use it, so the solution fits them rather than the other way round [4].
It’s also why a video call is different from a camera, not just a smaller version of one. Picking up a call means choosing to be seen, on your own terms. Plenty of people who’d hate a permanent lens in the living room are perfectly happy to answer a video call from a grandchild. The difference is who’s in control.
Two legal things worth knowing
It’s about whose home it is. A camera in your own home is generally exempt from data protection law. Put one in a parent’s home, though, and it’s their consent and comfort that matters most โ not anything to do with who’s related to whom [5].
Face recognition is a bigger step than it sounds. Under UK GDPR, a facial image used to identify someone is treated as biometric data, with stricter rules than ordinary footage [6]. Switching on face recognition isn’t the same decision as installing a camera โ even on your own front door.
So, camera or not?
Not necessarily either-or. A camera in a shared space, used for what it’s good at, is still genuinely useful. But there’s a difference between ‘I checked and it looked fine’ and ‘I’d know if anything was wrong’ โ and only the second one covers the whole house, all the time, including the rooms nobody wants watched.
